This lyrical silk kimono was dyed by Masao Aida from a Katagami carving by Isao Uchida in 2013.
Masao Aida produced this kimono as a gift for Cooper Hewitt. The color—a rich, pale purple—was selected by Aida because he believes that each person exudes their own individual color; this hue struck him as being particularly American. To produce the entire kimono, Aida and his assistants printed the fabric using the same stencil a total of 28 times.
This piece was included in the exhibit, Katagami.
