Up until the late 19th century, coasters made from wool felt were used in taverns across Bavaria. The coasters protected furniture from unsightly rings and kept uninvited flying guests and debris like leaves out of cold pints. The invention of thick paper coasters in the 1880s marked the demise of their felt counterparts, but the name stuck and to this day Bavarians call coasters Bierfilzl, "beer felt".
In keeping with tradition, Graf Lantz created these coasters made from the highest quality 5mm thick German merino wool; wool is the most hydrophilic of all-natural fibers, absorbing as much as 30% of its weight without feeling wet.
