Mike Abelson began Postalco in Brooklyn in 2000. Initially curious about the international transport of mail, he became just as interested in the paper itself. Many of Postalco's objects are made of paper, made to hold paper, or to hold the things we do with paper. It's not a surprise its logo is the carrier pigeon. About 8.25" long by 3.33" wide and a little more than 1" thick. Much of Abelson's early research was conducted in the quiet rooms of Cooper-Hewitt's National Design Library, on the third floor of the Carnegie Mansion. Since 2002, Postalco has been based in Tokyo and takes advantage of Japan's meticulous manufacturing capabilities. Its objects are carefully considered and beautifully handmade, often with results that simply cannot be improved upon. The Toolbox is made of specially treated cotton canvas and Italian calfskin, and lined in finely woven cotton will. Made to be used and worn in, it will look even better over time.
