Inspired by the banners and the flags at the Palio horse race held annually in Siena, Italy, Alexander Girard (American, 1907-1993) created the Palio, which is consisted of eight patterns. The variety of parallel bands of motifs resembles combs, fringes, flames, spikes, checkerboards, and coronets.
