The NYCTA Graphics Standards Manual is a reissue of the modernist masterpiece New York City Transit Authority 1970 Graphics Standards Manual designed by Massimo Vignelli and Bob Noorda (Unimark). The Manual details the theory, typography, color, and other graphic elements to instruct the design and construction of the iconic NYC subway signs that we still see and use today, but above all it’s a beautiful and important piece of design history.
Massimo Vignelli's personal copy of the original manual was the source material for each of the high-resolution page scans.
Printed with 13 colors in Italy, each of the 176 color plates uses a stochastic screen to ensure the highest level of detail and richness of black possible.

Standards Manual is a New York City based independent publishing imprint founded by designers Jesse Reed and Hamish Smyth in 2014, striving to archive and preserve lost artifacts of design history and make them available to future generations.

Massimo Vignelli is the winner of the 2003 National Design Award for Lifetime Achievement.
