The GROW Table Lamp is GROWN, not manufactured, from mycelium—the roots of mushrooms! This biofabricated lampshade utilizes a sustainable crop—hemp—and combines it with a rapidly renewable living organism—mycelium—to GROW a lampshade. In a matter of a few days, the mycelium cultivates a dense network of hyphae through the hemp substrate, solidifying into a solid structure within the custom lampshade molds. After the mycelium has fully matured, the lampshades are removed, dried, and heated, creating a stable, inert, and 100% biodegradable product.
The stand is sourced from felled or dying trees in Upstate New York and are sustainably harvested by a woman-owned and run business. Each stand has been handcrafted in Brooklyn, NY, also by a female woodworker to use the least amount of materials.
The GROW Table Lamp ships flat, thus reducing the carbon footprint. It assembles tool-free with a limited number of components and can be fully disassembled at the end of its life to recycle and compost all parts, thus not ending up in a landfill.
The GROW Table Lamp was funded on Kickstarter in October 2017.
