ETTORE SOTTSASS (1917-2007) was a prolific, post-war, Italian designer. His remarkable career produced a provocative body of work, including architecture, furniture, industrial design, glass ceramics, painting, photography and a wealth of writings. With this work he intellectually and aesthetically challenged the conventional wisdom of forms and proportions for over 65 years. With his colorful and humorous designs, he was a leading figure of the 1960s Anti-Design movement, which revolted against the doctrines of Modernism.

SOTTSASS'S career has recently been the object of major retrospective exhibitions: at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art in 2006, the London Design Museum in 2007, the Ghent Museum of Art. In addition, his works belong to the permanent collections of the Centre George Pompidou. Paris; the Museum of Modern Art, New York; the San Francisco Museum of Art; and the Stedeljik Museum in Amsterdam.
