Designer Kiyosuke
Material Tin
Country Japan
Date 1875
Manufacturer Kaikado
At the end of the Edo period, Japan opened its boarders to trade after more than 250 years of isolation. The first chazutsu (tea canister) was created by Kisoyuke soon after using tin plate, one of the imports available under the new laws. Six generations later Kaikado Studios still uses the same dies and molds to create their canisters, and they remain the industry standard for superior craftsmanship. The chazutsu’s unique double-wall air-resistant seal makes it ideal for storing delicate materials. The smallest of our chazutsu collection, this 100g tin canister has a wooden handle for easy use and a simple decorative element.

One of the most compelling features of the chazutsu is the natural changes it undergoes over the course of time. Over the next ten years the tin’s natural sheen will develop, and after 40 years your chazutsu will have darkened to reveal the metal’s true patina. Chazutus are designed to be heirloom pieces, and can be used daily for generations.
